A stop at the Trevi Fountain, the largest and most famous in the capital, is a traditional rite of passage for anyone visiting Rome. Every day the small homonymous square in front of the Trevi Fountain is crowded with tourists who throw a coin into the water to make sure they return to the Eternal City. The sculptor of the Trevi Fountain is Nicola Salvi, who designed it in the 18th century: since then it has been an authentic triumph of the Rococo style, with horses, mythological characters and rocky waterfalls. Today, after the long restoration works, the fountain is in all its splendor and after sunset is illuminated by a suggestive play of lights.
